



NASA's Roman Space Telescope launched in August 2026 and will sit about a million miles from Earth, using a technique called gravitational microlensing to find exoplanets it will never actually see. When a foreground star drifts in front of a distant one, its gravity briefly brightens the background star's light, and a planet orbiting that foreground star adds a small telltale blip.
Roman will stare at hundreds of millions of stars in the crowded galactic center, checking in every 12 minutes across six observing seasons, hoping to catch these rare, one-time alignments. NASA expects over 1,000 wide-orbit planets from this method plus roughly 100,000 more via traditional transits, giving astronomers two very different planet catalogs from the same pile of images.
The technique can even catch rogue planets with no star to call home, detected purely by their gravitational fingerprint on background starlight.
