South Carolina Republicans nominated Darline Graham, sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to run for his seat after Trump personally pushed her candidacy following her brother's July death from an aortic tear. Graham, who had shown no prior interest in office, beat Rep. Ralph Norman in a runoff after Trump staged a rally, arranged a rival congressman's endorsement, and phoned in a 'tele-rally' the night before the vote.

The race split Trump's own coalition — the American Conservative Union backed Norman — and Graham needed a runoff after winning under a third of votes in a nine-candidate first round. She now faces Democrat Annie Andrews in November, in a state where her win is considered likely given recent history.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A woman with zero prior interest in public office is now a Senate nominee because the president made a few phone calls and a hedge wall's worth of Republicans fell in line. Say what you will about democracy — it's efficient when the outcome is decided before the voting starts.
