Alice Weidel, co-chair of Germany's far-right AfD party, said in a September 11 interview that an AfD government would end all payments and military support to Ukraine and demand compensation from Kyiv. She also called for Ukrainian men of conscription age, whom she claimed number in the six figures in Germany, to return home, and said the more than one million Ukrainians receiving Bürgergeld benefits are no longer affordable to support.
The comments follow the AfD's win of over 43 percent of the vote in the September 6 Saxony-Anhalt state election, which Chancellor Friedrich Merz called a ‘tectonic shift.’ President Trump congratulated the AfD on the result via Truth Social, prompting a German lawmaker to call the remarks unacceptable and Merz to postpone a scheduled call with Trump.

A party that hasn't won a national election yet is already drawing up who gets sent home and who gets the bill, which tells you plenty about how it plans to govern if it ever gets the chance. Calling a state legislature result a mandate to rewrite another country's support is like a man who won the church raffle announcing he's now in charge of the county budget. The applause from Washington on this one says more than the speech itself.
