Haitians in Springfield, Ohio are being summoned to ICE offices in Blue Ash or Westerville, where their passports are collected and ankle monitors fitted, following the Supreme Court's June ruling allowing Trump to end Temporary Protected Status for 330,000 Haitians. TPS ended July 27, and a court lifted an injunction last week, though only Springfield's roughly 15,000 Haitians face the monitor requirement so far among central Ohio's 30,000 TPS holders.

A pastor who has accompanied people to the ICE office says officers suggested compliance might help their cases, a claim he doesn't believe; he suspects it's about staging people for deportation on demand. Immigrants report the monitors cause rashes, bleeding, and sleepless nights from battery beeps, with some devices reportedly overheating or catching fire while charging.

Haiti currently carries a U.S. State Department Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory over crime, kidnapping, and unrest. More than 1,000 American-born children in Springfield have Haitian parents, and ICE detained 35 people, including four Haitians, in central Ohio over a five-day span this month.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An ankle monitor that catches fire while charging is not a footnote, it's a warranty claim waiting to happen, and yet it's strapped to people whose only offense was following a legal status the government itself created and then revoked. Calling this a path to a better immigration outcome, as officers reportedly did, asks people to believe the hand tightening the leash is also loosening it. The government doesn't need to say the quiet part when the hardware does the talking.
