President Trump warned the European Union it could face large tariffs, and a possible halt to trade in some sectors, if it grants Canada associate membership, according to Politico. He called the concept 'ridiculous' and Canada a 'terrible trading partner,' while conditioning any retaliation on whether he judges the move hostile to the U.S.
The Canada-EU talks are unfolding as Ottawa seeks to diversify away from a strained U.S. trading relationship, building on the existing CETA free-trade framework. Associate membership remains only an exploratory proposal requiring unanimous approval from all EU member states, so nothing is imminent beyond the threat itself.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A trade policy that hinges on whether the president feels slighted that week is not a policy, it's a mood ring. Canada gets called terrible and ridiculous in the same breath, which is a strange way to keep a trading partner from wandering off. If tariffs are the answer to every hurt feeling, somebody ought to ask what the actual question was.
