Baltic Sea nations to form joint task force against drones

Countries bordering the Baltic Sea are negotiating a joint task force to counter drone incursions, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Aug. 28 ahead of a meeting with Baltic-region counterparts in Flensburg. The body is meant to speed information-sharing and response after a string of suspected sabotage incidents involving undersea cables and pipelines since Russia's 2022 invasion.

Dobrindt warned that hybrid threats could intensify in coming months and accused foreign powers of daily attempts to undermine EU democracy and security. The Baltic Sea borders eight NATO members — Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Denmark — along with Russia.

Task forces are the diplomatic equivalent of forming a committee to discuss forming a committee, and this one arrives years after the cables started getting cut. Rapid information-sharing sounds efficient right up until you remember the drones aren't waiting for the paperwork. Still, better a slow-moving alliance than none at all — faint praise, but praise.
