Sen. Eric Schmitt accused former special counsel Jack Smith of lying under oath about attending an Atlanta Hawks game, suggesting it was part of coordinating cases against Donald Trump with Georgia prosecutors. Smith said he had actually been at an Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball game in Maryland watching Caitlin Clark, and online researchers quickly matched his seat location and the arena's row numbering to that game rather than the Hawks' arena.

A spokesperson for Smith confirmed to HuffPost that newly surfaced video and photos do show him at the Hawkeyes game. Schmitt has not retracted the accusation, telling HuffPost only that 'Jack Smith has lied before,' and later posted a joke on social media rather than acknowledging the error; his office did not respond to a request for comment.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A sitting senator went after a man for perjury and got beat by some strangers on the internet counting row numbers in a basketball arena. When you get the Hawks and the Hawkeyes mixed up, the honest move is to say so and buy the man a hot dog. A joke posted online and a line about how he's lied before doesn't count as saying sorry, and anybody who's ever had to apologize to a neighbor knows it.
