Clerks reiterate Michigan elections are ‘safe, secure, fair’ as absentee voting begins

Michigan clerks and election advocates held a press conference Thursday as absentee ballots began mailing for November, with Grand Rapids Clerk Joel Hondorp declaring 'complete confidence' the state's elections are safe and secure. Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said Justice Department election monitors sent to Lansing and East Lansing during the August primary would be treated as ordinary poll watchers if they return, and disputed the stated justifications for their presence, including claims of long lines and misused provisional ballots.

Attorney General Dana Nessel said her office has prepared legal briefs for 'virtually every set of circumstances,' short of what she called a zombie apocalypse, in case of criminal incidents or voting threats at polling places. Promote the Vote's Mackenzie Walz said the state's election protection hotline is already seeing rising call volume ahead of an expected surge on Election Day.

Officials telling the public an election is safe is the normal business of officials, the same way a landlord tells you the roof is fine right up until it rains. None of that makes the reassurance wrong, it just means the only real test comes in November when the ballots are counted and somebody either believes the count or doesn't. Preparing legal briefs for every contingency except the zombie apocalypse is a fine joke, but the fact that it needed saying at all tells you where things stand.
