Effort to recall Antrim County Clerk gets go-ahead from state board

Michigan's Board of State Canvassers approved petition language Friday for a recall of Antrim County Clerk Victoria Bishop, who lost access to the state's voter file after officials said she changed and canceled voter registrations without authority, sending cancellation notices to more than 1,800 voters. It was the third attempt before the board; organizers now need over 3,500 signatures within a 60-day window to get the question on a May ballot.

State Election Director Jonathan Brater's letters say Bishop hasn't completed required training to regain her access, noting one module was marked complete in under a minute. Bishop's attorney says she's reviewing her appeal options and will keep serving Antrim County in the meantime.

Antrim County became nationally notorious in 2020 when a tabulator setup error briefly misreported results, fueling lingering fraud claims. Bishop won her 2024 race on a platform promising to 'restore election integrity,' a phrase now attached to the very actions triggering her possible recall.

Running for county clerk on a promise to fix election integrity and then getting your own file access pulled for messing with voter rolls is the kind of irony a person doesn't need to write, it just shows up on its own. The training records say it all: a whole chapter on voter status changes finished in under a minute, like skimming the instructions on a chainsaw before firing it up. Antrim County has had six years of this circus and it isn't over yet.
