British police have submitted files seeking charges against 54 people and 20 companies over the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people, closing out a nine-year investigation. Proposed charges include corporate and gross negligence manslaughter, fraud, health and safety offenses, and misconduct in public office. The Crown Prosecution Service says it will decide on charges before the fire's tenth anniversary in June 2027.
The investigation examined more than 15,000 people and 700 organizations, gathering 165 million electronic files and 27,000 physical exhibits. A 2024 public inquiry had already found the fire avoidable, blaming combustible cladding and insulation along with what it called systematic dishonesty by manufacturers who manipulated test data. Families' group Grenfell United noted that nine years on, no one has been held criminally accountable.

Nine years, fifteen thousand people examined, four million words of reports, and the actual outcome so far is a folder handed to a prosecutor's office that still has to decide. That's not a broken system moving slowly, that's what it looks like when the people responsible for a building's safety have money and lawyers and the people who died in it did not. The inquiry already told everyone what happened and who let it happen; whether anyone answers for it is a separate question entirely, and apparently a much harder one.
