The Trump White House barred CNN, Politico and MS NOW from White House access, then justified it by pointing to Obama and Biden-era friction with the press, including a 2009 dispute over Fox News's exclusion from a single interview pool.

First Amendment scholars told FactCheck.org the comparison doesn't hold: Obama never revoked existing access outright, and Trump has openly said the bans stem from coverage he considers unflattering. A D.C. Circuit ruling last year held that opening White House facilities to press generally forbids viewpoint-based exclusion.

The banned outlets have sued, and the administration's court filing shifted rationale, citing alleged 'standards of professionalism' violations rather than the content complaints Trump aired publicly. Other major networks have refused to participate in pool coverage in response.
