The Southeastern Conference asked an Alabama federal judge for a temporary restraining order to stop Louisiana officials from blocking Thursday's meeting, where league presidents will consider expelling LSU.

The dispute centers on Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, former Ole Miss players who signed briefly with NFL teams before joining LSU under coach Lane Kiffin; a Louisiana court cleared them to play, but LSU left them off the roster anyway for Saturday's win over Clemson.

The conference's amended complaint names LSU officials and Attorney General Liz Murrill, arguing LSU's recruitment of the players defies its professionalism rules regardless of whether they ever suit up; Murrill has called the claims 'garbage and frivolous,' and a preliminary injunction hearing is set for Wednesday before Judge Annemarie Axon.

Two players won their court case and still didn't get to play, which is the tell that this fight was never really about them. It's a conference deciding whether a member school gets to keep its seat at the table over a rule nobody bothered to test until it was inconvenient. Whatever happens Thursday, the players at the center of it already got benched by both sides.
