Seven Idaho entrepreneurs gathered in Boise this week for Trailmix, an annual pitch competition that awards a $20,000 cash prize and coveted shelf space at Albertsons' two flagship Idaho stores. Products ranged from fresh salsa and organic popcorn to hard kombucha, pet treats, baby food and coffee, with founders describing years of home production, freeze dryers crowding garages, and waitlists for wholesale expansion.

Past winners, including Idaho Barkery, Nosh Foods and ERTH Beverage Company, have parlayed the Albertsons placement into dozens or hundreds of additional retail partnerships. This year's finalists, several of whom run businesses out of their kitchens or home labs, described the competition's workshops on pricing and buyer pitches as practical help in an industry with thin margins and hard logistics.

The event doubled as a trade show, with the public sampling kombucha and popcorn between pitches, and finalists cheering each other's hustle even as they competed for the same prize.
