54% of those polled in eastern Germany call arms deliveries to Ukraine excessive

An ARD-Deutschlandtrend poll found 54% of eastern Germans and 39% of western Germans call arms deliveries to Ukraine excessive, per results published by Deutsche Welle. A political scientist cautioned this reflects a preference for diplomacy over an unwinnable arms race rather than pro-Russian sentiment.

The same poll found 56% of Germans view Russia as a strong or very strong threat, though easterners and AfD supporters were far less likely to agree. The far-right AfD, which recently won its best-ever result in Saxony-Anhalt at nearly 44%, has campaigned against Ukraine aid alongside the BSW party, arguing the money should go to domestic needs.
