The BRS has accused Telangana's Congress government of spending about ₹100 crore on cloud servers, printing, lamination and transport across 33 districts to issue new smart ration cards bearing photographs of Chief Minister and the Civil Supplies Minister, which the party says violates Supreme Court directions. Spokesperson Dasoju Sravan is demanding a CAG audit and action against those responsible.
Sravan noted the irony: Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra previously objected to Prime Minister Modi's photo appearing on Covid-19 vaccine certificates, a fight that led the Election Commission to strip the photo during certain state elections. He also recalled that former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao declined to put his own photo on similar public documents funded by taxpayers.
Sravan additionally asked whether the government plans to spend another ₹100 crore reprinting the cards yet again if they must be scrapped once election codes kick in ahead of GHMC and local body polls.
