President Trump signed an updated defense agreement with Denmark at the UN General Assembly, expanding the 1950s-era U.S. military presence in Greenland with two additional bases and restricting future military installations there to NATO members only. The deal enshrines Greenland's 'red lines' protecting its sovereignty and future self-determination, and requires the island's commitment to NATO should it eventually become independent from Denmark.
The agreement follows a year in which Trump repeatedly floated a U.S. takeover of Greenland and declined to rule out military force, before backing off after Greenland formally said it wanted to stay with Denmark. Danish and Greenlandic officials called the outcome a 'milestone' and a relief; the deal still needs sign-off from both the Greenlandic and Danish parliaments before taking effect.

It took a year of the president publicly musing about taking a country by force to arrive at an agreement that mostly just adds two buildings, which tells you plenty about how much of that talk was ever serious. Calling this a 'tremendous journey' is a strange way to describe scaring an island of 57,000 people over an outcome that could have been reached with a phone call. Greenland held its ground and got to keep its own map, and that's the actual news here, not the ceremony.
