More than 119 million Brazilians voted October 4 in elections that saw neither President Lula nor challenger Flávio Bolsonaro clear 50%, forcing an October 25 runoff. Among roughly 265,000 Brazilians living in the U.S., only about 75,000 voted at consular polling stations in Florida and elsewhere, down from 2022 turnout, which some attribute to fear tied to ICE enforcement given voting in the U.S. requires in-person attendance.
In the U.S., Flávio Bolsonaro took 45,004 votes to Lula's 23,335. Globally, Lula won in 64 of 101 countries offering voting, but Bolsonaro won in several nations with the largest Brazilian populations, including the U.S. and Japan. The author notes Trump would reportedly prefer a Bolsonaro presidency to further consolidate U.S. influence in the region.

A dollar fine for skipping a mandatory vote and people still stayed home in droves, which tells you something about what weighed on their minds that day. Whatever side wins the runoff, the diaspora numbers suggest the fight in Brazil has followed its people clear across the ocean. That is a lot of polarization to fit in a consulate waiting room.
