Latvia's Saeima passed amendments on October 1 restricting public broadcasters from airing Russian-language programming except during declared emergencies, national crises, or to counter disinformation, by a vote of 55-24.

The change follows a March 2026 Constitutional Court ruling that public media content must primarily be in Latvian, reasoning that Russian already has a robust commercial market and does not need state support.

The law, which still needs the president's signature and takes effect January 2027, arrives days after a landslide election win for Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs's party, and permits foreign languages only as creative flourishes in Latvian-language productions.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A court tells a country its minority-language rule needs fixing, and the fix that emerges happens to land right after an election that rewarded the party doing the fixing. Funny how that timing works out. Calling Russian a language that can fend for itself in the free market is a tidy bit of logic, right up until you remember who gets to decide what counts as an emergency.
