The South Lyon City Council spent Monday's meeting debating whether to renew its contract for Flock license plate reader cameras on 10 Mile Road, ultimately punting the decision to staff, who will examine legal and financial fallout from cancellation. A councilmember who once supported the cameras, Lisa Dilg, reversed course, apologizing for not researching privacy concerns before her original vote. A motion to cancel the contract outright was withdrawn in favor of the review.

Residents cited a USA Today investigation finding 22 police officials nationally arrested, fired, or placed on leave over alleged misuse of the technology, including a Florida officer accused of searching one woman's plate 189 times. South Lyon's department says data is deleted after 30 days, though more than a dozen other agencies have access to it. One councilmember, Margaret Kurtzweil, said she'd oppose canceling the contract regardless of what the review finds.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A council member standing up and admitting she didn't do her homework the first time around is rarer than it ought to be, and worth a nod. But asking the lawyer and the finance guy to weigh in before deciding whether cameras watching your license plate for a dozen other departments is a good idea puts the cart in front of the horse. The cameras are already up and running while everybody studies whether they should be.
