Massachusetts primary offers late-game litmus test for Democrats

Massachusetts holds primaries on September 1, with 80-year-old Senator Ed Markey facing centrist Congressman Seth Moulton, who has attacked Markey's age and tried, with limited success, to link him to Jeffrey Epstein. A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll has Markey ahead 60% to 32%.

Moulton's House seat has drawn six Democratic challengers, led by former Biden deputy assistant Dan Koh, in a wealthy, well-educated district that political scientists describe as progressive but institution-friendly. In the 8th District, progressive attorney Patrick Roath is challenging two-decade incumbent Stephen Lynch, the state delegation's most conservative Democrat.

Analysts quoted note that Massachusetts respects incumbents and name recognition, and that the primary's placement on a popular moving day could depress turnout among younger, more progressive voters. Republican challengers in the general election are expected to be largely irrelevant in the longtime Democratic stronghold.

A 33-year age gap and an Epstein attack line produced a 28-point deficit, which tells you less about Markey's stamina than about how little appetite this electorate has for insurgency dressed up as generational change. Calling yourself a fighter against the machine works better when the machine isn't leading by two touchdowns.
