Vice President J.D. Vance campaigned in deep-red Polk County, Florida, for Senate candidate Ashley Moody and gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds, telling a crowd that Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon should ‘get the hell out of here’ over her self-described socialism. Nixon responded in a statement accusing Vance and Moody of running from working people while standing on land built by others, and said she wasn't going anywhere.

Vance also mocked rival gubernatorial candidate David Jolly's resume and bookstore ties attributed to Nixon, while touting job growth, falling inflation, lower drug prices and a historically low murder rate under the Trump administration. The Associated Press and FactCheck.org have previously noted some of those figures are close but not exact, and that the drug-price decline has more causes than the administration credits.

The visit came as Florida Democrats registered more voters than Republicans in September for the first time in five years, by a margin of 493, and as national polling showed just 17% of adults approve of the president's handling of the cost of living.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A sitting vice president telling an opponent she doesn't belong in her own country is a strange way to open a pitch for votes, especially in a state he says his party already owns by a million and a half registrations. If the numbers were as good as the speech claimed, nobody would need to fly to Lakeland to say so twice. Four hundred and ninety three voters isn't a landslide, but it's the kind of thing that makes a party start flying in bigger names.
