More Than 2,300 Mexicans Sent To Guatemala And Honduras As Trump Ramps Up Third-Country Deportations

The U.S. has deported nearly 2,300 Mexicans to Guatemala this year and dozens more to Honduras, a sharp shift from earlier in Trump's second term when Mexicans were sent almost exclusively back to Mexico directly. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo confirmed the arrangement, describing it as a 'transit stopover' in which deportees are bused into Mexico within 24 hours, funded by either the Mexican or U.S. government.

Mexico's National Migration Institute confirmed the routing, begun mainly in April, saying its purpose is to prevent deportees from re-crossing into the U.S. Asked why Mexicans aren't sent directly home, DHS did not explain the logistics, instead stating only that the administration is using 'all lawful options' to carry out what it calls the largest deportation operation in history.
