New York Governor Kathy Hochul wore a hijab during a visit to the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, prompting a wave of criticism from conservative commentators including Fox News' Riley Gaines, Newsmax's Rob Schmitt, and Representative Brandon Gill, who variously called it a betrayal of feminism or a form of subjugation. Right-wing accounts and the New York Young Republican Club amplified the criticism online, with one invoking September 11 imagery.

Hochul faced similar attacks last year from Senator Ted Cruz over a headscarf worn at a Muslim police officer's funeral, responding then that she was showing respect for a grieving family's faith. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the renewed criticism.
