Earth life support systems are flashing red, warns 2026 Planetary Health Check

The 2026 Planetary Health Check, co-published by the Potsdam Institute and Planetary Guardians, finds seven of nine planetary boundaries transgressed, with ocean acidification joining climate change, biosphere integrity, novel entities, freshwater, land use change, and nutrient pollution as breached limits. All seven are moving further into what the report's authors call the danger zone, according to lead co-author Levke Caesar.

The report flags a stagnating land carbon sink, weakened by drought, wildfire, and biodiversity loss, that could shrink the carbon budget nations are counting on. It also raises concern about seafloor trawling, estimated to disturb 1-2% of the seafloor annually and release up to 400 million tonnes of carbon, alongside a litany of 2025-2026 climate extremes including record hurricanes, Nepal's flash flood, and the weakest Indian monsoon in nearly two decades.
