Right to Life Michigan says it opposes constitutional convention after DeBoyer comments on abortion

Right to Life of Michigan announced Wednesday it opposes convening a state constitutional convention, a question voters will decide Nov. 3, days after Republican lieutenant governor nominee Jay DeBoyer suggested a convention could be used to reintroduce abortion limits. RLM president Amber Roseboom said the group opposes ‘opening the state constitution to a convention at this time.’

DeBoyer did not dispute the recording of his remarks, obtained by The Detroit News, but walked it back by calling the abortion issue ‘settled.’ Michigan Democrats have seized on the comments to inject abortion into the 2026 race even though it isn't formally on this year's ballot.

A convention question appears on Michigan's ballot every 16 years under the state constitution; voters have rejected it in 1978, 1994, and 2010. If approved this year, delegate elections would follow, with the convention convening in October 2027 and no set time limit.

It's a strange day when the anti-abortion group is the one telling everybody to calm down about the constitution. Roseboom's not wrong that voters would still get the final say, but you don't call a fire department to tell them a match is out unless something's already smoldering.
