A memo from Way to Win, a progressive Democratic donor group, argues candidates in North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Arizona and Nevada should campaign on using government as 'a tool of accountability for the ultra-rich,' citing new polling from Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. The survey found Sun Belt voters preferred a populist framing blaming the top 1% for wealth concentration over a GOP framing centered on government spending, immigration, and 'wokeness,' by 59% to 37%.

Lake said individual candidates like Texas's James Talarico and Georgia's Jon Ossoff are already running this way, but argued the broader party apparatus lags behind because, in her words, the establishment in both parties remains too tied to corporate money. She also cautioned that explicitly invoking Trump can be polarizing and sometimes less effective than attacking 'corporate villains' directly.

A donor-funded group polling voters and discovering that voters like populism is a bit like a weather vane announcing which way the wind blows after the flag's already been flapping for a week. The candidates figured this out on their own; the memo just gives the consultants something to bill for. Still, if the finding holds up in November, nobody will much care who said it first.
