Japan court rules human voice is protected in TikTok AI case

A Tokyo court ruled that voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda's publicity rights were infringed by TikTok videos featuring what he says is an AI clone of his voice, marking Japan's first ruling that a human voice is legally protected from commercial AI mimicry. The judge dismissed his request to remove the videos, however, because the anonymous account behind them had already taken them down months into the lawsuit.

TikTok had argued the voice was merely generic and any resemblance to Tsuda subjective; the anonymous account, which once had over 200,000 followers narrating conspiracy content, allegedly earned roughly $3,200 a month. Japan's voice actor union has launched a campaign against unauthorized AI mimicry, calling it a threat to an industry built on years of trained craft.
