Marine Le Pen warned on X that Ukraine's accession to the European Union would hurt France first, citing threats to French agriculture from what she called “fierce, unfair competition” and possible cuts to France's share of EU farm subsidies. The post came a day after Hungary lifted its veto on opening two more negotiating clusters in Ukraine's EU talks.
Le Pen, who announced a 2027 presidential run in July, has separately argued France can no longer sustain current levels of financial aid to Ukraine. Members of her parliamentary bloc have said they intend to end support for Kyiv if they take power.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
It is a neat trick, worrying about the farmer down the road while the next country over gets shelled. Le Pen's math on subsidies may be real, but the timing, landing right as a wartime neighbor inches toward the club, says plenty about which worry came first. A fence dispute is easier to have when the other guy's barn isn't on fire.
