Former Rep. Barbara Comstock told MS NOW's ‘The Weekend’ that Republicans likely lost the 2026 midterms over the summer, pointing to an unpopular Iran war, rising gas prices, and climbing interest rates as self-inflicted wounds. She cited an Axios report describing a GOP pollster's optimistic Senate forecast as dismissed at a party retreat as ‘delusional.’

Comstock relayed a line she attributed to a GOP operative, ‘we're trying to make the patient comfortable,’ used to describe Senate Majority Leader John Thune's campaign stop with Georgia candidate Mike Collins, who trails incumbent Jon Ossoff by double digits. She suggested Trump's planned October rally in deep-red Alabama fits the same logic. Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross added that the whole country is already on life support.

When the metaphor of choice among Republican operatives is hospice care, that tells you where the internal polling actually sits, no matter what gets said on camera. Sending the president to stump in a state he already won by a mile isn't a strategy, it's an admission dressed up as a schedule. A patient made comfortable is still a patient nobody expects to walk out of that hospital.
