A barge collision destroyed a stilt house on the Madeira River in January 2025, killing a mother and her three children; four months later another freight vessel struck mining barges owned in part by the surviving father in a neighboring community. Residents interviewed by Mongabay along the river describe repeated near-misses and collisions, including one in July that destroyed three more mining barges.

The Madeira waterway, spanning 1,060 kilometers through Amazonas and Rondônia, is a key route for soy, corn, and sugar convoys under Brazil's Arco Norte logistics corridor, with vessels carrying up to 18,000 tons even in dry season. President Lula ordered the waterway into a privatization program in August 2025, then revoked the plan in February after Indigenous groups objected to a lack of legally required consultation on a related river; a $24 million dredging plan proceeded anyway, with a management tender expected in 2027.

Communities along the river say they were never consulted about the expansion, and the upcoming presidential election — a likely runoff between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro — adds uncertainty about whether safety concerns will factor into future plans. Residents and a local Catholic mission worker describe barges passing dangerously close to homes and boats, with little indication vessels alter course to avoid them.
