Rep. Tom Barrett wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and UN Ambassador Mike Waltz urging the General Assembly to open multilateral talks on AI, including a possible treaty, incident-sharing, and keeping humans in control of nuclear and offensive weapon systems.
Barrett has also backed the Doctors Not AI Act, which would bar insurers from using AI to determine medical necessity, a bill supported by groups including the American College of Physicians and the American Psychiatric Association who cite delayed treatment and financial harm from automated denials.
Barrett faces a reelection challenge from William Lawrence, who wants a pause on advanced AI development and a national AI compact funded by a tax on industry profits.

Asking allies and adversaries alike to sit down and agree on rules for a technology nobody in the room fully controls is a fine sentiment, the kind you write on a card and mean sincerely. Whether Beijing and Washington show up to the same table over this is another matter entirely. The insurance bill, at least, is something a person could actually vote on and see happen.
