Romania scrambles fighter jets as unidentified air target nears border

Romania scrambled two F-16 jets from Borcea's 86th Air Base early Thursday after radar detected an airborne target 20 kilometers east of Galați County, the defense ministry said.

Emergency alerts went out to residents in Galați and Tulcea counties at 3:27 a.m., with the all-clear sounding less than an hour later at 4:14 a.m.; officials reported no airspace incursion.

The incident follows a drone crash in Suceava County the day before that forced schools in four towns to cancel classes.
