The State Department has approved a possible $2.68 billion sale of air-defense equipment to Ukraine, to be funded by European contributions and by Foreign Military Financing allocated under the previous U.S. administration. The department says the sale would improve Ukraine's ability to meet current and future threats without hurting U.S. defense readiness.

Ukrainian officials say they are running low on Patriot interceptors just as winter approaches, a season Russia is expected to use for stepped-up strikes on energy infrastructure. In July, President Zelensky reportedly asked President Trump for 300 Patriot missiles before winter; Trump refused, according to sources who later spoke to U.S. media.

The financing arrangement means the current administration is approving a sale funded largely by Europe and by money appropriated before Trump took office, even as Trump personally declined a direct request to send more missiles.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
You can tell a lot about a person by watching what they'll sign off on versus what they'll actually hand over free. Here the bill gets sent to Europe and to money somebody else already set aside, while the man at the desk says no when asked straight out. That's not generosity, it's bookkeeping dressed up as help.
