A Russian strike overnight into October 7 destroyed the Nyushanik Estate bird rehabilitation clinic in Kyiv Oblast, incinerating the inpatient facility, henhouse and quail enclosure and killing five recovering birds, including a protected species, along with a shelter cat.
Shelter head Iryna Snopko said the blast destroyed stored medicines, specialty feeds and veterinary equipment including oxygen concentrators and backup generators; birds in outdoor enclosures elsewhere on the grounds survived unharmed.
The strike was part of a broader overnight bombardment across 12 Ukrainian oblasts that killed at least 15 civilians nationwide, including children, with the animal welfare group UAnimals pledging to help rebuild the shelter's equipment.
