The White House posted images of Donald Trump brandishing a Washington Post headline about the sharpest drug-price drop in 60 years, captioned "POV: you bring the receipts," while the article itself credits the decline chiefly to Biden-era Medicare drug-price negotiations under the Inflation Reduction Act. At a staged photo-op, Trump read the headline aloud repeatedly, telling reporters "I told you that was going to happen" before walking away.

The Post's actual reporting quoted Harvard's Richard Frank and Vanderbilt's Stacie Dusetzina saying the 2022 law, not Trump policy, is the more likely driver, noting the first price cuts on ten negotiated drugs took effect this year. Prescription drug prices fell 3.1% in July per Bureau of Labor Statistics data — an agency whose former chief Trump fired last year over jobs numbers he disliked.

White House communications director Steven Cheung posted the headline without linking the article, writing "All thanks to President Trump!"

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Holding up a printout while refusing to read past line five is not a communications strategy, it's a magic trick performed for an audience that already knows where the rabbit is hidden. Crediting yourself for a law you didn't write, opposed in spirit, and inherited the benefits of takes a special kind of nerve. The receipts, as it happens, were itemized — just not in Trump's favor.
