Rwandan doctor faces first UK genocide charges over 1994 killings

Vincent Brown, 65, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder as crimes against humanity, becoming the first person charged in the U.K. over Rwanda's 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

Prosecutors say Brown, then head of Rwanda's Department of Family Health, directed and incited killings in Kigali between April 6 and 13, 1994, including the deaths of six named victims. Brown denies involvement, saying he left Kigali by mid-April, and his lawyer called the charges the beginning of the end for his client's efforts to clear his name.

The case follows a seven-year Metropolitan Police investigation launched after a 2019 request from Rwanda, and six more people remain under investigation in Britain. Brown, granted bail, next appears at the Old Bailey on Oct. 9.
