Netanyahu’s party seeks to impede Israeli expat voting

Likud has petitioned Israel's Central Elections Committee to shut down initiatives helping the estimated 600,000 Israelis living abroad return to vote in the Oct. 27 election, arguing that discounted group airfares amount to an illegal electoral bribe. The petition targets the U.S.-based AID Coalition and its ‘Fly&Vote’ campaign, which also helps expats with voting paperwork and airport transport. Israeli law bars voting from abroad except for diplomats and certain emissaries.

The AID Coalition, which calls itself apolitical, said it would review the appeal, and accused Likud of trying to block citizens, including some who returned to fight after Oct. 7, from voting. The election is expected to be tightly contested between Netanyahu's bloc and a bloc led by rival Gadi Eisenkot.

Funny how a party confident in its own popularity doesn't usually go to court trying to keep voters off planes. If the discount fares are really a bribe, it's a strange one, since nobody's told which way to mark the ballot once they land. This has the smell of a campaign more worried about turnout math than about principle.
