President Trump threatened new tariffs on South Korea unless it invests in the $54 billion Alaska LNG project, after Seoul said it would only commit if the project proves economically viable. 'If they don't want to do it, that's OK with me — I'll just charge them higher tariffs,' Trump said, per Bloomberg.
It's unclear whether Trump actually has the authority to impose such tariffs unilaterally after the Supreme Court limited his tariff powers earlier this year. The dispute strains months of negotiation in which South Korea pledged hundreds of billions in U.S. investment under last year's trade agreement, and the Alaska project carries added weight as a political showcase ahead of a contested Alaska Senate race.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An ally says a project has to make financial sense before they'll sink billions into it, which used to be called business, and the response is a tariff threat the courts may have already taken off the table. It's the kind of bluff you make when you're betting the other guy didn't read the fine print on your own hand. South Korea, by all signs, read it.
