The flight crew reported a 'high vibration' engine alert during climb, reduced power, and continued climbing after vibrations stopped, before a loud bang prompted an emergency descent back to Thessaloniki. The engine had passed ultrasonic inspections in May with no faults found.
Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has suggested the failure may have been caused by 'foreign object damage.' The aircraft was operated by Ryanair subsidiary Malta Air.
