Ukraine's Defense Intelligence agency (HUR) announced it has detected a disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting the agency and its combat units, allegedly using paid media outlets, bloggers, and Telegram channels. The warning follows a September 2 shootout in Kyiv's Berezniaky district between SBU and HUR personnel, tied to the disputed detention of Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander Stepan Kaplunov.

The SBU says it foiled an assassination plot against a Russian opposition figure; Kaplunov's lawyer calls his client's detention an abduction. President Zelenskyy called the incident shameful and demanded internal investigations from both agencies, while intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov called for a thorough, impartial probe.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two branches of the same government shooting near each other and then each blaming outside disinformation for the bad press is a neat trick, if it works. It rarely does. When the agencies start warning the public not to believe unverified sources, it is worth asking who exactly the public should believe instead, since both sides are currently graded on the curve.
