Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger met with cattle farmers in Botetourt County, a jurisdiction that voted 72% for Trump in 2024, to oppose the president's plan to import 300,000 metric tons of tariff-free ground beef and subsidize 25% of consumer costs.

Trump announced the 90-day policy on Truth Social, claiming it would lower prices for families while letting the domestic herd, currently at its smallest size in 75 years, rebuild. Industry groups including the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and Virginia Farm Bureau joined Spanberger in calling the plan an assault on a market that has never needed subsidizing.

Farmers cited drought, rising input costs, shrinking farmland, and Trump's unresolved trade tensions with Canada, Virginia's top agricultural customer, as bigger threats than any of this addressed. The USDA did not respond to a request for comment, and Trump has not said which countries will supply the beef.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Subsidizing imports to fix a shortage caused partly by the administration's own tariff war is the kind of solution that creates its own next problem. Farmers in deep-red counties applauding a Democratic governor for pointing this out should tell the White House something, though it probably won't.
