Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution, backed by 261 lawmakers, recognizing and condemning Soviet-era crimes against Hungarians in the Zakarpattia region between 1944 and 1946. The statement describes mass detentions of civilian men by NKVD and SMERSH agents under the pretext of labor mobilization, and thousands deported to the Gulag without trial.

The resolution also condemns extrajudicial executions and ethnic, religious and social persecution from that period, and calls for commemorating victims, opening archives, and adding the history to education programs. Parliament separately noted that Russia's current actions in occupied Ukrainian territory echo the same pattern of civilian repression.
