The Progressive Change Campaign Committee has endorsed Elijah Manley, a 27-year-old substitute teacher who grew up homeless, in his primary challenge against 11-term congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida's newly drawn 20th district. Wasserman Schultz, the former DNC chair, is running as the only white candidate in the majority-minority, historically Black-represented district despite not living there, after Republican redistricting broke up her old seat.

Congressional Black Caucus chair Yvette Clarke called the situation 'painful,' noting the district's community has been disrupted by the decision. Other candidates include former congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who resigned amid federal funding misuse allegations she denies, ex-Broward mayor Dale Holness, and rapper Luther Campbell.

A May poll found Wasserman Schultz leading 39% to 21% head-to-head, but Manley pulling ahead 36% to 27% once voters received basic biographical information about both candidates. Manley is campaigning on Medicare for All, a federal jobs guarantee, and taxing the wealthy.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An incumbent forced out of her own district by her own party's mapmakers, choosing instead to parachute into a seat historically held by Black representatives, is the kind of self-own that doesn't need embellishing. The PCCC didn't have to work hard to frame this one — the optics did it for them.
