Sierra Club Florida announced opposition to Amendment 3, a Republican-backed ballot measure that would raise homestead tax exemptions to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Legislative analysts project it would cut local government revenues by up to $12 billion annually starting in 2031.

The group warns the lost revenue would hamper local governments' ability to fund storm hardening, sea walls, and tree trimming ahead of hurricane season, potentially forcing new fees on residents instead. Several law enforcement agencies have also come out against the measure.

Meanwhile the Vote Yes on 3 campaign received a $10 million contribution from Florida Realtors, according to independent journalist Jason Garcia, funneled through a political committee formed quietly in late August.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Cutting local tax revenue by billions and hoping storm defenses just take care of themselves is the kind of plan that looks fine right up until the water starts rising. The realtors dropping ten million dollars into a low-key committee tells you who expects to come out ahead here, and it isn't the seawall. When the bill comes due it tends to land on whoever's left holding the sandbags.
