Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Akesson told AFP he is eyeing the prime minister's post in 2030 or later, ahead of a Sept. 13 election the governing right-wing bloc is expected to lose despite the four parties polling at 43.9% combined.

Akesson said his party, now Sweden's second-largest with 20.5% support, will back Ulf Kristersson as the bloc's prime ministerial candidate this time in exchange for 'significant influence' and ministerial posts with 'substantial responsibility.'

Kristersson said in April he was willing to hand the Sweden Democrats influential Cabinet posts such as immigration and integration, formalizing a collaboration that helped bring his coalition to power in 2022.

Nothing says confidence in your own coalition's future quite like publicly staking a claim to the top job five years out. Akesson gets to look patient and inevitable at the same time, which is a nice trick if the voters cooperate.
