President Trump used a Myrtle Beach rally meant to support Sen. Darline Graham's runoff bid to note that he received more votes than her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, asking her to 'explain that.' The remark came during a speech exceeding an hour, with Trump not turning to Graham's own qualifications until roughly 39 minutes in.

Darline Graham, who is running for a full term after being appointed to fill her brother's seat, spoke for about three minutes, thanking Trump for his endorsement and leading a USA chant. Trump also used the event to attack Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, claim U.S. control of the Strait of Hormuz, and dismiss 'affordability' as a scam.

The runoff election is scheduled for Aug. 25.

There is a particular species of endorsement in which the endorser is the only candidate on the ballot, and the actual nominee is a supporting player in a story about someone else's vote totals. Three minutes of podium time and a USA chant is not a campaign event, it is an opening act with the amps already unplugged. If the closing argument for a Senate seat is that the guy at the microphone once outperformed the last occupant, voters are entitled to ask what, exactly, they are being asked to buy.
