Analysts at Defense Express say a North Korean KN-23 missile variant tested on Sept. 20 reached altitudes of 60 to 70 kilometers, higher than the roughly 60-kilometer ceiling Pyongyang had typically flown. A second test in the same window reached 590 kilometers in range at 70 kilometers altitude, and last month a test reportedly hit 90 kilometers.
Analysts suggest the altitude experiments may be aimed at teaching the missile to evade Patriot air defense systems. A prior study cited in the report found North Korea received production materials for the KN-23 from Russia, and Ukraine's Defense Ministry says the North Korean missiles use outdated soldering and civilian components likely obtained by skirting sanctions.
