Republican Jay Feely, a former NFL kicker running in a competitive Arizona district, appeared alongside Trump at the GOP's Dallas midterm convention this week even as many fellow Republicans skipped it entirely to distance themselves from an unpopular president. Feely leaned on Trump's primary endorsement to win his nomination and used his convention speech to invoke Reagan-style talk of American greatness, alongside a jab tying his opponent to democratic socialism.

Republican consultant Chuck Coughlin called the appearance politically illogical given the district's competitiveness, and Democrats moved fast, with the DCCC branding Feely a 'loyal Trump lapdog' while noting his opponent, an ER physician, was working a hospital shift the same night. Coughlin predicted Democrats will use the Dallas appearance as ammunition through November.

Standing next to an unpopular president in a swing district isn't bold, it's just handing the other side a photograph they didn't have to ask for. Even the man's own party strategist couldn't find the logic in it, and that ought to tell you something. Some candidates run toward the fire because they think it makes them look brave, and some just haven't noticed they're the ones catching.
