President Trump told reporters Ukraine should stop striking Russian oil refineries, claiming those strikes, not his own restrictions on Iranian crude, are driving a global diesel price spike. Politico reports a senior European official involved in mediation calling the claim absurd, noting Russian fuel exports were never a major part of U.S. consumption and that Trump himself has claimed America can produce all the oil it wants.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent both echoed the refinery-strikes explanation in recent days. The European official countered that any energy ceasefire must be reciprocal, since Russia continues bombarding Ukraine's power grid, and suggested Putin does not respect the current administration enough to honor one anyway. Separately, envoy Jared Kushner claimed most of a peace deal is finalized pending 'creative' solutions on territory Ukraine has refused to cede.

Blaming a country under bombardment for the price of diesel takes a certain confidence, the kind a man has when he's sure nobody's going to check the math. An unnamed European diplomat did check it, and called the whole premise absurd, which is diplomat for 'that dog won't hunt.' Midterms have a way of making inconvenient wars very convenient to explain away.
