Analysts tell Courthouse News that President Trump's falling approval, driven partly by the Iran conflict he launched without congressional approval, has put the Republicans' 53-47 Senate majority in jeopardy. Gas prices have risen as the conflict drags on, compounding the affordability problems Trump had promised to fix.

Key races include Maine, where Democrat Troy Jackson leads Susan Collins narrowly after her original challenger's campaign collapsed amid assault allegations; Michigan, where leftist Abdul El-Sayed faces Trump-endorsed Mike Rogers; North Carolina, where Roy Cooper leads Michael Whatley by double digits; and Texas, where scandal-trailed Ken Paxton trails Democrat James Talarico after ousting incumbent John Cornyn in the primary.

Trump himself reportedly told reporters he was 'worried' about Whatley's chances, a rare public admission of trouble on a map Republicans once considered safe.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When the president picks your opponent in the primary and then tells reporters he's worried about you in the general, that's not a strategy, that's buyer's remorse out loud. A war with no vote and no end date has a way of showing up on grocery receipts, and voters notice that math faster than any ad campaign. Collins surviving by keeping her distance from the man who'd otherwise be her biggest asset tells you plenty about where the wind's blowing.
